Joshua 4:1-3 & 6-7
When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests; feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’ “
“that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.” (ESV)
Our Rocks
This has been a tradition for our family for many years. Each year since we started we review the year on New Year’s Eve to see what we remember that God has provided or what he has done in our lives over the previous year. We write these provisions and works of God on rocks and we place these rocks into a glass jar. Each year we review all the rocks in our jar and we tell the story behind each rock. What a time of encouragement and remembrance of what a great God we serve! These reminders help us keep focused on God and his work in our life and when we are discouraged or fearful of circumstances-we can see this pile of rocks and remember who our God is!
Building up something that you and your family can look back on is a great way to help your family’s faith grow. What can you start doing so that you will have a way to remember these things as a family?
