A Generation Comes, a Generation Goes

“Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him.” 2 Kings 23:25

…and the world keeps getting darker. Meaning, evil seems to be growing in the world rather than the light of the goodness of Jesus Christ.

If every person who loved Jesus took His final commands seriously in their own home, what would happen in the world? Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). Can you imagine how it would impact the world if every Dad took this command to heart, starting with his children?

The 2 Kings scripture above inspires me. The scripture above challenges me to love Jesus more. The scripture above also makes me say…how does that happen? No, not how does a person turn to the Lord? But, how does a child of such a righteous king turn from his father’s ways and do what is evil? The scripture says in the same chapter that the son of King Josiah, Jehoahaz, “he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord” (2 Kings 23:32).

I was recently having coffee with a few other house Dads on the ranch and one of them said that we needed to start praying for the next generation. I chimed in by agreeing with him and then added, “we also need to start putting spirit led traditions into place”. Traditions that help our family come back to the truth about God and the truth about who we are in light of Him.

This summer, I’m thankful to have the privilege of marrying off my two sons. They are beginning to start their own families and will need to take seriously how God wants them to disciple in their own homes. Meanwhile, God has given me another great challenge of discipling eight guys in my home on the ranch. Please pray for me.

If you are a Dad, would you consider the account of King Josiah? I’m not picking on him. I’m simply using this as an example to challenge myself and others to consider how I might help the next generation follow Jesus and not forsake Him. What should a Dad be doing and what should a Dad not be doing in order to help his children walk in the ways of Jesus?

Question to Consider:

What is the next step Jesus would have you take in teaching your family to follow Jesus?
